Astronomical Observatory

The Astronomical Observatory of Orlyonok is a unique educational place where campers can explore the planets of the solar system; learn about the characteristics of stars, their life and evolution.

The Observatory applies modern telescopes Celestron with a primary mirror aperture of 150 and 203 mm and hand controllers with database of 40 thousand celestial objects to observe the universe.

One of the best telescopes is Zeiss (100 mm diameter lens). With this telescope you can not only view planets but also the nearest star – the Sun. In addition, the Observatory has a special solar telescope with 60 mm diameter lens, which allows you to see sunspots, the chromosphere of the Sun and solar prominences.

The largest and most modern telescope Meade 12' (305 mm diameter lens) is designed with the use of the latest technologies. It is able to take astronomical photos.

In total campers can use 10 telescopes.

One of the most atmospheric places of the Observatory is the exhibition of science fiction paintings called Time. Space. Man. The paintings were donated to Orlyonok in 1989 by the magazine Tekhnika – Molodyozhi. The exhibition presents works of such artists as G. Tishchenko, V.Khakimov, A. Klimov, D. Rakhmaninov, A. Andreev, S. Gavrish, V. Burmistrov, G. Pokrovsky, G.Golobokov, Y. Glushchenko and others.

Paintings help visitors look beyond the real world, dream, or create their own image of the universe.

In the Observatory classrooms as well as in the lobby where the exhibition is located, fascinating lectures, practicals, creative meetings, and thematic evenings are held.

That's interesting! On 28 October 1976 a Soviet astronomer Lyudmila Zhuravlyova found an asteroid of irregular shape at the Crimean astrophysical observatory. The asteroid was named – Orlyonok (also known as Orlenok) in honour of the Russian pioneer camp Orlyonok, on the occasion of its 20th anniversary. The diameter of the celestial body is 11-25 km.
